Dealing With Foot Tendon Pain
There are several tendons that go to, from, and across the foot connecting to several joints that help with walking, and flexibility. There are times when these tendons can become inflamed, swollen, and stretched causing great foot tendon pain.
Athletes With Foot Tendon Pain
The majority of foot tendon pain is found in active athletes who are constantly putting pressure on the many tendons and ligaments found in the foot. The constant running, jumping, twisting and instant starts and stops can lead to a tearing down over time.
Baseball, basketball, football, and soccer players are routinely having foot tendon pain brought on by a combination of the activities of the sport, and fatigue. A leading cause of retirement is not because of an inability to play the game, but because of prolonged foot tendon pain.
Tendonitis
After athletic caused tendon problems, tendonitis can be found in a great percentage of the population. This is often found in those who are constantly on their feet with hard working jobs, or those who place instant stress on the foot without having done for a long period of time. Tendonitis affects a particular tendon in the foot, the posterior tibial tendon.
Causes of this type of foot tendon pain happens through either activity, degeneration, or a rupture of the tendon itself. This causes an inflammation of the area and pain to spread through the foot. As the tendon becomes weaker through constant use, it can rupture.
While tendonitis afflicts a great many people it can be alleviated by resting the foot, and applying ice to the affected area. Anti-inflammatory medicines will help relieve the pain while the tendon heals. Wearing insoles may be necessary to support the arch of the foot to help with preventing tendonitis in the future.
Foot Tendon Pain Prevention And Treatment
As stated, wearing insoles in your shoes will help to support the arch in your foot to help prevent tendonitis, or other inflammation to occur. If necessary, there are braces, and supports, that can be used by athletes and laborers. Constant flexing of the joint can lead to foot tendon pain so being able to alleviate some of the pressures involved in constantly bending the ankle, foot, or toes can also prevent any tendon problems.
Treating foot tendon pain is a matter of resting the foot and applying ice. Wrapping with a compression wrap, or if necessary a foot sleeve, will help keep your foot from swelling further. In extreme cases you may have to undergo surgery to fix the problem.
Foot tendon pain afflicts a great percentage of the population due to the working conditions, sporting activities, and even weight issues. Early treatment can help strengthen the area to prevent future tendon problems. However, the key to treatment, and prevention, is to stay committed to working on the area and not taking it for granted.
