Finding And Treating Foot Ankle Pain

Foot and ankle pain is most common in athletes because they run, jump, and put tremendous stress on their joints, bones and ligaments. However, foot and ankle pain is not always what it would seem to be. Even in the case of a sprain, it might be because of a weakness already in the ankle or even a fracture that has never healed due to continuous straining. Finding and then treating your foot and ankle pain will help you as you get older.

Foot Problems Can Begin In Infancy

Your current problems in your foot do not have to be something that has just happened. It can be something that was caused during infancy. Many babies are born with some sort of foot deformity. This doesn't mean that drastic surgery needs to be performed, but can be treated with simple observation and corrective means when ever pressure is placed on the foot. For example, a brace might be used when the baby is learning to walk to keep the foot straight instead of turning in.

Pain In Calf

The calf muscle, which is the elongated muscle at the back of the lower leg, can cause tremendous amounts of foot and ankle pain. These pains can be caused by swelling in the calf, a blood clot, or even cramps that travel into the ankle area.

Arthritis Leads To Joint Pain

A lot of foot and ankle pain can be directly attributed to some form of arthritis. This is caused by calcium deposits in the joints and ligaments due to sprains, and past fractures. Many people suffer with some arthritis throughout their life, which becomes more pronounced in later years. Treating this form of foot, ankle pain is mostly with the use of medication to help alleviate pain.

Sports Related Sprains

An ankle sprain is something that most athletes will endure at several points in their career. This is what happens when a great amount of stress is placed on the ligaments, and tendons, in the form of stretching, that tears them resulting in a sprain. This is very painful and leads to bruising and swelling of the area. A sprain can commonly be misdiagnosed as a fracture because of the similarities. The best remedy for this type of foot and ankle pain is for rest, ice, compression, and elevation.

Tendonitis

Another common form of foot and ankle pain is tendonitis. This is caused when the tendons in the foot, or ankle, become inflamed due to stress or pressure. Medication can be helpful in alleviating the pain, but rest and elevation can treat it for healing.

Most foot and ankle pain is caused by a long list of common ailments. It is important to remember, though, that your foot and ankle are heavily used and need to be treated according to the symptoms. Don't try to diagnose the problem yourself as it could lead to more problems. See your physician at the onset of any prolonged pain, swelling, discoloration, or sharp pains.
